5 out of 5 stars Epson Artisan 800   October 13, 2008

Install was a breeze and the network capabilities are a plus. It has fax and copying capabilities and can also duplex print with the optional adapter. I haven't tried the CD printing yet but that is a nice plus also. It has a nice 7.5" front panel with a 3.5" viewing screen which works wonderfully. The multiple memory card slots are also excellent.
I have to say I was initially very disappointed with this printer though due to the quality of prints. I went through 3/4 of the color cartridges trying to get an acceptable photo quality print. I tried multiple combinations of settings but nothing worked. I tried one last thing prior to returning the printer. I purchased the Epson 5 star Ultra Premium Photo Paper. WOW what a difference this paper makes. I went from lousy spotchy dotted prints on Kodak Premium Paper to photo lab quality in an instant. I was using my previous Kodak Premium photo paper but just could not get good results. I tried straight from the camera, from the printer and from the computer trying different combinations of settings nothing worked. I was down to about a 1/4 of the original cartridges when I finally switched paper. Do not use the Kodak paper in these you will be disappointed. Kodak papers are optimized to work with Kodak inks which are not the same as Epsons. I am not sure what other papers people are using but the Epson 5 star works beautifully. I was on the edge of returning this up to that point. I am not sure how the other Epson papers work yet I am a little hesitant to try at this point. I think the manufacturers of these printers need to work together and make their papers and inks a little more interchangeable. But that is wishful thinking. Especially Kodak who are supposed to be the photo paper gods. Epson inks are definately made to utilize the Epson papers. If you want to waste a lot of ink trying to get a good print use other manufacturers papers which are optimized for their inks, or just throw out your old paper and purchase some Epson Ultra Premium Photo Paper.

This printer replaces a recently kaput home Epson Stylus Photo 890. So far, the Artisan 800 is better in every way. It has the multi-page feeder for scans and copies, a very clear control panel, it looks great, it seems to have a smaller footprint than the Epson specs suggest, and it makes labs-results-or-better photo prints on Epson premium glossy paper.

The paper tray is two levels, all plastic, and has many flimsy plastic paper guides, so it remains to be seen whether it holds together over time. The paper tray does hold 8.5x11 paper plus 4x6 or 5x7 photo paper on the second level of the paper tray, which is a plus.

I've always owned Epson straight-through paper-path printers. I'm hoping this Epson folded-path mechanism works better than most of the HP printers I've used at the office.

Overall, a terrific printer so far.

UPDATED 11/18/08: Just tried to load Avery labels sheet(s) to print Christmas labels and return address labels for the mother-in-law. This was a NO GO. This printer cannot feed these sheets, and there is no work-around (manual feeder, etc.). When I went back to the owner's manual and to the Epson online resource, there are zero entries on how to load labels sheets. "D'Oh!" Now I know why. My recent experience with Epson online/email tech support had a three-week response time for a simple question about changing an ink cart, so I don't anticipate a response until long after I need to print labels. Very very disappointing for an otherwise terrific AIO photo printer. I would have to knock my rating down to four stars.

5 out of 5 stars The best printer I've owned YET!   September 29, 2008

I just got the Epson Artisan 800 a couple days ago from Amazon. It's replacing my Epson Stylus Photo R340 and the one I had before that the Epson Stylus C80. I also have a Epson Perfection 4180 Photo scanner. I have limited space, I just did some moving around and no longer have a place for my scanner. My C80 I hadn't used in years, it was just sitting taking up space, and my R340 wouldn't print correctly ever since I installed 3rd party ink cartridges. So I got into looking for a replacement and saw the new Epson Artisan printers. I was going to just get the 700, but the 800 just has more features and things like a higher Resolution when scanning and a nicer front display.

Some of the things I really like are, the Paper tray is internal, and it's a duel tray. One for your normal 8x11 and the other for your smaller Photo Paper. On the Negative of that, I wish I could have both trays using 8x11, for normal paper in one and Photo in the other as I normally use 8x11 Photo paper. I also like the built in CD/DVD printing tray. With a push of a button, it pops out front, you stick your disc on it and hit the button again and it pops back in ready to print. It's simple. With my R340 I had to use this long tray, drop down the front door for it, and line up the arrows, it would also go and stick out of the back of the printer. Sometimes I had problems getting it working correctly. On this one it's pretty Idiot prof and completely internal. The front color display is really nice and clear to read and can be placed from flat down to all the way up. You can pretty much do everything with the Printer and never have a computer hooked up to it! From printing on a CD, or removing Red Eye from a picture, loading in pictures of whatever Memory card you have from Compact Flash, SD, MSpro, and USB. There's just so many things. The Automatic 30 page Document feeder is handy and works well and it's a nice touch to just close one small flap and seal the whole top up to keep the dust out. It does scan picture BETTER when using the Flat Bed Scanner. Also unlike most Ink-jet printers and even other lower Artisan models like the 500 and 600, this one the Ink Cartridges are very simple to get to by just lifting the top part and the cartridges are on the right front of the printer always. They aren't on the printer head it's self moving back and forth with the head, they instead stay in place and a flexible multi channel tube feeds the ink though to the print head. You also have a choice in the size of ink cartridge. A normal one and a Larger size for all but Black which only comes in the larger size. As for as I know they are the same size I guess, but one holds like 60% more ink then the other.

I'm currently using the USB connection, but you can also plug it into your Wired Network with it's built in Ethernet port, or use Wifi for a wireless setup. You have to have it wired to setup first and then you can go completely wireless from your PC(s). Of course you may want to plug it into your phone line for the built in Faxing Capabilities that it has also.

For all of it's feature's, it's not all that large in size. About 18" across, 15 1/2" deep and like 7 1/2" in height at the highest point. You can also buy the Optional Automatic Duplexer for it, which is only $30 at the Epson store, but currently on Back Order. It plugs onto the back and allows you to print on both sides of a page Automatically without you having to flip the pages yourself. On other printers adding one can cost Hundreds, so $30 is pretty CHEAP! I plan to buy it, but like I said it's back ordered.

The Black color of the printer looks nice, but it gets dirty easily. I've ordered a custom cover to put over the top of it to help. This printer is packed full of features and at a reasonable price. It can print pages quite fast! Printing out normal Text pages, and it's almost throwing them out, at laser printer type speeds. Navigating around on the screen will take some time to learn, as I'm still learning. There's so many features, it just takes time to figure it all out. This looks to be the best printer I've owned yet by far. How it holds up and prints over time I don't know. So I'll do another review in time. I'll also post a few pictures of mine.

5 out of 5 stars Epson hits a home run!   October 16, 2008

The Epson Artisan is a great all around printer!

One of my favorite features of this printer is the ability to print directly onto printable DVDs and CDs. Epson has finally gotten it right with this printer. The print to disk surface function works much better. With previous printers (R200, R340, & R1800) the disks were placed on a tray that was manually set into place. In the past I had many misprints because the tray did not get correctly aligned by me the user.

The Artisan 800 has a fixed tray that comes out when a button is pushed. The same button needs to be pushed to retract the tray and allow the printer to print to disk. I have had no problems with misprints with this printer. I also believe the quality print is higher. Epson has also finally improved the print to disk software. I find that it is much easier to use and has less "lag time" when moving from one step to the next.

The copier works well and the buttons are very intuitive. For an inkjet printer I feel the copy speed and print quality is very good.

As a general document printer again the speed is quite good. Additionally, the inks dry quickly and doesn't smudge even when fresh from the printer. The color and print quality is wonderful.

For every day photo printing this is an excellent printer. If you are looking for something to print higher end photos I would really encourage you to look at one of Epson's wide format printers.

While styling of the printer itself is one of my least important traits this printer does have nice lines and looks very sleek.

But don't buy it because of its looks. Also, don't think just because it looks good on the outside that it is not a work horse on the inside. This is a great all around printer that is a great tool for someone running a small business, who needs to be able to fax from home, is a photo enthusiast, or someone that needs a good all around printer.

This is the 5th Epson printer that Ihave owned and it is by far the most versatile. I firmly believe that it will be as reliable as all the other Epson that I have owned that are now still being used by kids and grandkids.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome WiFi printer and scanner!   September 24, 2008

The Epson Artisan 800 is a FANTASTIC printer. My previous printer is a Canon MP750. I like it as well, but it's huge. The Epson is absolutely streamlined, sleek. It's a scanner, copier and printer in one.

The Epson 800 has a built-in Wireless Internet card. I installed the included software on my MacBook Pro and it effortlessly just worked! I can print from my Macbook laptop to this printer, completely wire-free, which I could never get to work on the Canon (which was hardwired into our network).

My husband has a Dell PC upstairs and it also prints to the Epson on the main level. The printer is fast, high quality, has an SD card slot. Very nice screen and easy to use. Didn't even have to read the manual; it's highly intuitive. I really like this printer. It prints very quickly and makes nice copies.

My first Epson printer and I'm very impressed. I highly recommend!
